4The Nicholas Burns segmentFeb 28, 2008
By Shalom Freedman "Shalom Freedman"
I have great respect for the knowledge, and articulateness of Nicholas Burns. He is clearly a most competent and hardworking player in the American foreign policy game.
The first subject he speaks about here is Kossovo's declaration of independence which the United States supports. He defends this decision by placing most of the blame for the problematic situation in the former Yugoslavia on the Serbs. I do not believe this is fair. Burns also does not speak about the problem of creating a Muslim state in the heart of Europe when the world is troubled by an expansive, aggressive form of Islamism.
He also speaks again with Charlie Rose about the Iranian nuclear program. He is still the diplomat looking for a diplomatic solution perhaps when the time for such a solution has already passed. The sanctions he talked about five months ago have still not been put into effect. The Iranians have said they will defy them and build their own nuclear capability. Burns explains that oil- and gas- rich Iran has no need for civilian nuclear power. He also explains that the United States has offered to build a civilian nuclear program for Iran. He said that China, Russia, Great Britain, France and Germany also agree to participate in this. He rightly sees Iranian rejection of this offer as indication that their real goal is weapons- capability. He makes it clear that a nuclear Iran would be a danger for the whole of the Middle East.
