The Tzipi Livni segmentFeb 28, 2008
By Shalom Freedman
"Shalom Freedman"
Tzipi Livni is the foreign- minister of Israel. She appears here to explain Israeli foreign- policy and to speak about the peace-process with the Palestinians. She speaks an 'Israeli English' and at first it is a bit difficult to understand her, but after a while one gets accustomed to it and may even be said to have a certain charm. She is extremely upbeat during the interview, smiling and laughing often, perhaps a bit too much considering the serious matters under discussion. She explains fairly well Israel's situation in relation to the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel withdrew from Gaza, removed Jewish settlers from their homes , transferred property including a functioning network of greenhouses to the Palestinians. It expected that after its withdrawal there would be cooperative relations with the Palestinians and the Palestinians would focus on their own social and economic development. Instead they initiated a campaign of 'rocket terror' against the Israeli town of Sderot and the Southern Negev region's settlements. Livni's clear explanation of the Hamas' violence do not however sit well with her selling of Mohammed Abbas as great peace-maker. She and the Kadima led government she is a part of are advocates of the two- state solution. However the need to promote this solution has led her to overlook the duplicitous actions of her negotiating partner. For Abbas is the head of Fatah whose El-Aksa brigades also continue in terrorist acts against Israel. Moreover Abbas clearly says one thing to the Israelis and Americans and another for Arab and Palestinian consumption. In the latter he is never really accepting of the sovereignty of Israel. In other words Livni advocates a two- state solution with a leader whose committment to peace is extremely questionable. Many Israelis she has gone overboard in trusting and promoting the sincerity of the 'partner'. Of course I understand her dilemna. How can you explain to good- willed people like Charlie Rose that in fact there is at the moment and maybe for a long time to come, no real way to peace? How can you explain that the 'other side' continues with its incitement and effort to deligitimize Israel and that there are no really signs of change there? If you are honest and say these things then you (i.e. Israel) seem to be the obstacle to peace. So Livni promotes a peace- process she appears to believe in, but which I think she is mistaken to believe in. After all as she says to Charlie Rose one of the worse things is building up illusions whose frustration then leads to more violence.
