4Both the Iraq and the Pakistan- Afghanistan update segmentsJun 19, 2008
By Shalom Freedman "Shalom Freedman"
The Iraq segement was an informative one. The idea that American public's attitude towards Iraq is formed by events in 2006, and is now out of date is an important one. The Biddle strategy is that the U.S. has to reduce troop levels while staying in Iraq for several years. Gordon speaks of what was a a 'failed country' now having become a 'fragile country'. It seems that the Iraqi military is able to handle certain military tasks, but the U.S. vital still for functioning of civil administration.
As Nasr points out splitting of Shiite groups suggests a problematic and chaotic future. Biddle points to major supplying of all militant group by Iranians especially Shiite militias that are targeting U.S. troops.
The consensus is that the military situation is in better shape than it was eighteen months ago. The Petraeus effect. But the road is long and uncertain. When asked about what the candidates should do Biddle spoke about the Democrats worries about being blamed for either not withdrawing or withdrawing too quickly from Iraq. Biddle forgot to address what McCain might do.
I was surprised that no one spoke about Iraq's situation and the price of Oil. But in general this segment was a good updating.
I had more problems with Ahmed Rashid section. I feel Charlie Rose should have had some pro- American government person there, or some kind of balance. Rashid blames the U.S. for neglecting Afghanistan and Pakistan by over- committing to Iraq. He blames it for not doing proper nation- building in Afghanistan. He blames the U.S. for having overconcentrated on Al- Quaeda while allowing the Taliban to increase the space of their sanctuary in Pakistan. He condemns Musharaff and the U.S. support of him. He says that most terror attacks in Europe have come from Islamic groups educated in Pakistan- Afghanistan. This is what he is most afraid of a major terror attack in Europe. He also troubled at the thought of the whole region descending into Chaos.
Charlie Rose did not pick up the 'chaos' scenario to ask what might happen with Pakistan's nuclear weapons in such a case. He also did not counter the accusations against the United States for failing to build a state in Afghanistan. It seems everyone expects the United States to solve all their problems for them. This discussion left too many open ends, too many unasked questions to be satisfactory. There should have been if not a government spokesman, then a person sympathetic in some way to the Bush Administration. We need to hear the U.S. Government side occasionally and not simply the side of those who find fault with it whatever it does.
