Nicholas Kristoff substituting for Charlie Rose talks with U.N. Representative Egeland, World Refugee Association leader Bacon, and Senator Barack Obama on the situation in Darfur. He receives an update on the situation as well as some of its historical background. The hundreds of thousands defenseless woman and children living in tents and subject to attacks by the Janjaweed militia under the sponsorhip of the Sudanese government seem a part of mankind abandoned by the rest. Obama says the Europeans have done very little to help and the Americans not enough. He outlines an action-plan. Egeland speaks about there have been relief efforts which helped in their past but their petering out now. There is a sense of emergencey and desperation. As I understand it the situation is not improved even at this writing over a year later. A painful human tragedy in which the evil seem to be getting away with it again- and their victims suffering without any real help.
