The Will Shortz segmentJun 29, 2008
By Shalom Freedman
"Shalom Freedman"
I once was a faithful Sunday New York Times Crossword puzzle - doer. Shortz says that puzzle- solving is a particular kind of pleasure, affording a sense of completeness rarely given in life. He points to the black and white , the joy of filling things in, the play of the mind. He does not speak about the frustration of not getting an answer, the wringing of heads and hand, and the sense of 'wasting time' which has always been my problem with doing crosswords. Shortz the editor of the NY Times Crossword is an aficionado, someone who loves what he does. He tells Charlie Rose about the whole procedure of reading and accepting, and editing crosswords. He speaks about Crossword doers as intelligent people who it is fun to be with. One of thsoe Charlie Rose segments in which he brings before he public someone many have known about but few have seen or heard before.
