Michael Steinhardt a legendary Wall- Street figure speaks with Charlie Rose about his having decided to dedicate his energies and fortune to helping the Jewish people survive, and thrive. Steinhardt one of the principal funders of the important 'Birthright' program explains the unique and painful demographics of the Jewish people in the world. The declining diaspora populations which are leading Jews to be decreasing proportions of the general populations of the countries in which they are resident. The Jews once three percent of Americans are now around two percent or less. Steinhardt does not mention as he should have the horror in the background, the Shoah or Holocaust which led the Jewish people to lose more one - third of their numbers. Steinhardt focuses also on the Jewish disproportionate cultural contributions to mankind in justifying his concern with their future well- being.He is engaged in the somewhat awkward business of explaining the localization of his concern, instead of focusing on general human problems. To my mind this is not necessary. Just the fact that he belongs to the Jewish people and cares for them means he has a legitimate right to devote himself to their well- being. In fact I believe he is a tremendously commendable figure, who has done much to help the Jewish people through Birthright, and other programs.
