| | | | NEW ZEALAND | Home » » Crush | | | | | | | Description: | | Produced with the help of the Sundance Institute, Alison Maclean's first feature, Crush, is a clever, gynocentric neo-noir. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock) stars as Lane, the film's conflicted femme fatale. The film opens with Lane speeding along a winding road. She's driving her best friend and lover, Christina (Donogh Rees), a literary critic, to meet with an author, Colin (William Zappa), at his home in the New Zealand countryside. In the midst of a snarky conversation, Lane is momentarily distracted and drives her car off the road. The car flips over, and Christina is badly injured, while Lane walks away with barely a scratch. She goes to Colin's house, where she meets Angela (Caitlin Bossley), his shy, tomboyish teenage daughter. Lane doesn't immediately identify herself, and Angela -- thinking that Lane is actually Christina -- takes her for a walk. The charmingly aggressive Lane begins flirting with the impressionable girl, and it's clear that Angela is smitten with the brash American woman. Later, Colin arrives home, and he agrees to let Lane stay in their home for a few days. Before long, Lane has seduced him. Angela is jealous and begins going to the hospital to visit Christina, who is recovering from a severe head injury. As she recovers, regaining control of her movements and the ability to speak, Angela tells her again and again that one horrible person is to blame for her condition -- Lane. But Angela is not prepared for the harrowing results when she brings Christina home for a visit. Crush is an amusingly twisted thriller from down under, rooted in well-drawn characters, along the same lines as Jocelyn Moorehouse's wickedly clever Proof. Maclean demonstrates great skill with actors and with complex material, which is also evident in her second feature, Jesus' Son. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi | | | Product Details: | | | Actors:

twisted sleeper, great character portraitFeb 26, 2003
By CEM I am surprised by the other review posted of this film. This was the full length feature debut by Kiwi film maker Allison Maclean who was first brought to attention with her short film "The Kitchen Sink." It is at all times a dark and emotional film, and even unnervingly humorous at some points. It fully delves into the complex and generally tenuous relationships between women. It shows the intense jealousy and rivalry that can co-exist with a fierce loyalty and comraderie all at once between two intelligent and successful women. While I have read reviews of this film that hint at a lesbian relationship between the two adult female leads, I never picked up on it, but did read a strong possiblity of that attraction between Lane (Hardin) and Angela (Bossley). I think the contrast of the good and evil in the established relationship between Lane and Christina, and then getting to see the evolution of both those elements through the development of the almost perverse friendship between Lane and Angela is fascinating. This film is a beautiful portrait of the conflicted relationships that exist between women in our modern society and the fact that there is a male sexual relationship thrown in is almost secondary and not comepletely necessary for the ultimate storyline. The bleak and harsh New Zealand back-drop is a perfect setting for this story as well. I own this film personally and can without a doubt recommend this for at least a pre-purchase veiwing. Also of note: Director Allison Maclean directed the first 2 episodes of HBO's Sex and the City

An Interesting Ethical QuestionMar 17, 2009
By Artist & Author There is a lot in this movie that my wife and I found to be strange. Probably the most obvious one is that the Lane, the car's driver, seems to show no concern for her supposed friend, Christina, after she is critically injured in an accident. She is left with permanent brain damage. They were on their way to interview an author, so Lane goes there, where she meets the author's fifteen year old daughter, Angela. Like us, Angela feels Lane's behavior is calloused, so she befriends Christina and helps her recover as much as possible with permanent brain damage. This is a great example for teens, and one that makes the movie worth watching and discussing.
Both my wife and i foung the movie to be fascinating, and we appreciate the fact that it has very little, if any, offensive language. There is a bit of sex, and fleeting exposure of breasts, but they are very minor. The movie held our interest right to the end.
A lot of people think the movie ends with an evil act of vengeance. We thought it happened because Christina was barely able to walk, and lost her balance. You and your teens will have to watch the movie to decide for yourself. But, let's assume that it was an act of reprisal. How would that reflect on Angela's selfless help to Christina? [We saw no evidence that Angela was manipulating Christina to get even.] This should make a great discussion for traditional values families.

A thriller that never thrillsAug 14, 2000
By Buddy Straight Limp, lackluster plot with uninspired acting and uninteresting characters. The only possible point of interest is Marcia Gay Harden of 'Miller's Crossing.' She hasn't had many good parts other than that film, and this isn't one of them.
