"When Germany stretched greedy hands toward the Middle East in the war of 1914-1918, a great cavalry force came into being. They were the men of Australia and New Zealand-the ANZACS-the mad bushmen-the men from Down Under. Call them what you will-their glories can never grow dim.... They fought and suffered to emerge triumphant!" This superbly made war movie, a tale of rousing adventure and bittersweet romance, of inspiring courage and noble sacrifice, takes us to the legendary lands beset by strife since ancient times-to Jerusalem, Cairo, Gaza, Beersheba and the Sinai Desert. In order to stop the evil German war lords from taking the Suez Canal and other areas vital to the survival of the free world, thousands of gallant horsemen journey across scorching desert ("an agony of thirst and heat"), confront German machine guns, engage in fierce hand to hand combat, and participate in the most heroic cavalry charges since the days of the American West. Its all here: thrilling Combat scenes; magnificent panoramas of men and horses moving along the horizon; the haunting strains of Australias favorite song, "Waltzing Matilda"; the camaraderie of brave soldiers facing imminent death; and even brief moments of romance. (An intriguing subplot involves the love affair of a cavalryman and a Frenchwoman, who is determined to avenge her fathers brutal death at the hands of the Germans, and who boldly travels with the enemy-disguised as a boy!). The message was clear to 1941 audiences faced with an even more ominous German war machine; as the film tells us, the cavalrymens sons now say "the torch you threw to us we caught. And now our hands will hold it high. Its glorious light will never die!" 84 minutes.NOTE: This DVD is published under license from Video Yesteryear - Plain Case - NO ARTWORK | | | Product Details: | | | Actors:

A must for WW1 buff's, shows the australian "she'll be right mate" attitude that accompanied so many australian diggers through the war.
the footage is recorded from original film and is a little "jittery" in the VERY begining but settles down ok, it even has the original "intermission" in the middle of DVD.
realistic audio in battle scenes, none of this studio mixed sound effects but actual "on feild audio". so much noise its hard to distinguish what and where its comming from, just as it would have REALLY been like on the battle field.
if you like the Australian LIGHT HORSE history then this should be in your movie collection, just remember this DVD is a direct copy of the original 1941 film, and the audio and visual quality is only as good as it was in 1941. having said that, i'd recomend it to any one who is interested in the Australian war effort.

Bring this out on DVD!!!May 21, 2004

I would like to see this movie. In an effort to draw more attention to it, I gave it 5 stars. If this were a DVD, I would buy it tonight, despite the price tag and the long wait for delivery. If you have seen this movie, please write down your thoughts here. It sounds very exciting. Should this be a "Classic" WWI movie? Unless it receives more attention, it will remain a secret pearl of Australia. "They were the men of Australia and New Zealand-the ANZACS-the mad bushmen-the men from Down Under." My husband, who is a gifted historian, knows of these legendary soldiers, but he had never heard of this movie either. We would both like to see it! I would like to thank firehouse444 for bringing it to my attention in his/her list 'So you'd like to... Find the true gems of Australian cinema !!'. Thanks.

1938 film. Picture quality poor, sound poor. Story good. The first two points could more or less be expected. Film itself would appear to have been copied onto a computer.
