Good movie, terrible/bootleg dvdFeb 20, 2011
By Bitter Almonds This is one of the few dvds available for this movie, as there isn't an official R1/North American release of it with English subtitles. The parts where the characters are speaking French are subtitled in Spanish, but the bottom subtitles could not be read since the aspect ratio is wrong and cannot be adjusted for on the television or dvd player. The dvd looks like a copy of a copy, complete with video noise artifacts and copied at the wrong aspect ratio (it reminds me of those old bootlegged videos that used to be taped off the cinema screen).
A brief synopsis: the story takes place in Argentina during the "Dirty War" (1976-1983). A young girl is seen associating with a left-leaning fellow one night; at first, there's nothing to be thought of two people on a date, so it seems safe. At home, her mother rents a room to a quiet young man whom the girl talks to once in a while. One day, a strange man asks her if she's ________ ________. She slowly nods "yes" and he hails a group of armed men to detain the girl and search the house. This is the beginning of a brutal nightmare, made more so by the fact this is what used to happen to many people who'd just "disappear." The girl is blindfolded and taken to a clandestine dungeon where other detainees are held and tortured for weeks, months, years at a time by govt.-backed paramilitary groups. In this case, their base is referred to as "Garage Olimpo" (lit. "Olympus Garage"). In a strange turn of events, one of her designated torturers is the quiet/shy young man...
The movie itself is terribly bleak and will leave a lasting impression. If you can get it with English subtitles, I highly recommend it. If you understand Spanish well, then this one should be okay (although I still say buy a better copy, maybe a European R2 dvd of it).
