Interesting but stereotypicalJan 06, 2009

I thought the Panama/Colombia Globetrekker DVD was interesting but not a good reflection of Colombia. My wife who is from Colombia thought it offered a slanted view of Bogota as a dangerous, militant city. Instead of showing the more cosmopolitan aspects of the city it was portrayed as dangerous and poor. The visit to the cocaine farm seemed strange since it's illegal. Also the lost city visit and the interview with the sipritual guru who chews coca leaves all day plaued in to the stereotype. Interesting to watch but not up to GT's high standards.

Colombia is famous for its violence. but it is just like saying Americans are white. this video does not show a reality but just an stereotype of what people ( who have never visited) think about this country. it is a pity how a video can be manipulated.

We enjoyed it and learned a lot!Dec 07, 2009

We loved the Panama canal zone history and especially enjoyed watching huge cargo ships actually maneuver through the canals (with 24" to spare on a side!)
In Colombia we learned how cocaine was made and why it is so addictive. We wondered how the Globe Trekker producers were allowed to show the process since it is illegal but were interested to know those things. We could understand how chewing the coca leaves helped in high altitudes - a question we have always had. It was also explained how to get around the helicopters looking for the crops - another question we have always had.
We got the impression that the violence in Colombia was downplayed although the trip to the bulletproof clothing maker was fascinating. There must be a need for it in that country if people are purchasing it. My husband and I felt Megan McCormick pulled off these sensitive subjects as only she could have done. She had a genuine interest in the people she met and helped them share their stories with all of us. We orginally borrowed this from our library but have since purchased it for our home library as it is one we will want to see again. We enjoyed it and learned a lot.
