4Interesting and Informative, but approach with extreme cautionOct 19, 2006

This is one of a series of Arab language DVDs made about each of the major confessional groups/political parties in Lebanon. This is nominally a quasi-documentary, but there is no real effort to find balance, at least in the sense that Americans are used to (say in a PBS documentary). This DVD consists primarily of a three hour dialogue by the leadership and members of the Lebanese Shi'a political party Hezbollah, and is effectively a vehicle for them to present their views on the history, organization, and goals of Hezbollah. Topics discussed include the formation of Hezbollah, relationship with the revolutionary government with Iran, conflict with the rival Shi'a party Amal, the defense of Lebanon against the Israelis, and many others. Overall, there is a wealth of information in this DVD, but there is also a considerable amount of self-serving propaganda and/or half truths as well. Sheik Nasrallah in particular deftly avoids straight answers in certain circumstances that would have shed an unfavorable light (to say the least) on Hezbollah.

If your interest in Hezbollah and this DVD was recently inspired by the defense of Lebanon by the freedom fighters of Hezbollah against the Israelis and you really don't know much about Hezbollah (or Lebanon), this DVD is probably not, in all honesty, the place to start to learn the whats and whys and hows Hezbollah came to be. As I said above, there is a great deal of information in this DVD, but there is also a great deal that is glossed over or consciously evaded. You really need to know a bit about the history of Lebanon before approaching this DVD to put things into perspective. If this applies to you, I would highly recommend that you read Kamal Salibi's book `House of Many Mansions' and Robert Fisk's `Pity the Nation' before approaching this DVD. This documentary will then provide you with a wealth of information that will fill in many of the gaps in your knowledge, but you will be armed with some awareness of where you can't take Nasrallah (and others) at his word. On the other hand, if you like the American Thinker or World Net Daily and want to learn more about Hezbollah after seeing them humiliate the IDF, don't bother with this DVD, you are already too smart and knowledgable to be fooled.
