Great EpicMay 17, 2006
By Marti Siskin The production the acting and directing was great. The subtitles sometimes were placed on the wrong scene; or the actor would talk in hindi for several sentences and all the subtitles would show are three words or a short sentence. I know we have missed a lot because of language BUT still a great epic. They took 11 dvd's to build the story then finally in the 12 disk they spoke BRIEFLY of the 18 chapters of the bhagvad gita....READ THE BOOK...'The Holy Geeta' by swami Chinmayananda a great commentary or another a real shorty 'The Bhagavad Gita' by penguin books translated by Juan Mascaro.
This Mahabharat was a great epic worth keeping in your collection along with the story of Jesus Christ and the Buddha.

Moksha, a good thing!Jun 17, 2004
By Ramya You'll like it if you are more into the story than the cinematography. You can tell that it was a low budget TV serial but the DVD sure beats the VHS version. The editing isn't that great but the script compensates for most everything else. This has been the first and only version I have seen of this epic and therefore have to admit that it is pretty good. The DVD comes with a bonus "the making of" for every volume. These don't have English subtitles but they are still interesting to watch (especially when you see the actors out of character). 94 episodes may seem like a lot but all that time was needed to properly introduce all the characters and potray every detail in its proper light. I highly recommend this to anyone who would like a glimpse eastern philosophy. There isn't much to compare to this epic not even Homer's Iliad (as it says in that intro up there). It is a story in a category on its own. Whether you were brought up told this story or don't know anything about India, I'll guarantee that you'll love it! This will be the 3rd time I'm watching it and it gets better every time!

Mildly disappointedSep 05, 2005
By Abraham Rajan Having been a fan of the Mahabharat, I expected much from the DVD.
Pros -
1. Nice picture quality for being an old series.
2. The presentation is simply great.
3. Special effects, though primitive, fit in and it's not overdone.
Cons -
1. Extremely poor Subtitle quality.
- There are a lot of scenes where the subtitles simply disappear, and reappear like 2-5 minutes later. It's quite annoying.
2. Some scenes are made simply to drag everything. This, unfortunately, is evident in virtually every episode.
Overall - a great collection, certainly worth it. If not for the subtitle problems with the DVD, I would've given it 5 stars.

MahabharatOct 03, 2005
By David P. Putney The sound quality of the music on these CDs is very poor, but improves during regular spoken dialogue. I made the mistake of making some written notes on the summary booklet before watching the DVD's, or I would have returned them, for replacement copy. So I am not sure if this problem applies to all copies of the film. This is an otherwise well done film of one of the two great Indian epics. The English subtitles are reasonably well done. The acting was adequate, although occasionally a little stilted. It includes an abridged summary of the Bhagavad Gita, skipping over some of the more difficult metaphysics. I thought it was a little strange to present Krishna armed to the teath while teaching Arjuna, when he had agreed only to be the driver of Arjuna's chariot, and to not take (physical) part in the battle. All in all, this is an important contribution to the Mahabharat epic by making it accessible in detail through film, with 94 episodes. Unfortunately, according to the summary, the story is not complete. The final temtation and enlightenment of Yudhishtira, and all the scenes leeding up to this are missing. The story ends with Bhishma (Bheeshma) giving a "discourse on Dharma and his soul leaves for the heavens." I just hope the sound problem isn't endemic in all the published DVDs.

Epic presented wellJun 12, 2005
By Adarsh Gupta Mahabharat was undoubtfully the best TV serial ever shown on Indian television. So much so that the streets were deserted when it was telecasted and people scheduled their day to be sure to catch the show.
I was a teenager during 80s when this was on television, and I was not a big TV person. I still remember the strong will to catch this serial. Chopras, normally producing movies, have done a great job of creating this. If you know the epic, you do feel that's exactly how it must have happened. You do picture Lord Krishna in Nitish Bharadwaj and Puneet Issar as Duryodhana. It has such a grip that I would want to see it over and over again. If you have not seen it, I would strongly recommand watching it at least once. - Enjoy!
