In fact, the only signs of his rebellion are his ponytail and the boots he wears under his priest vestments. He is stuck on the intermediate level in the church hierarchy, a rank which is too low for his wife's family, but too high for his best friends. One Sunday, after an overdone rebellious sermon, the bishop wants to meet Pitkanen. He thinks he's in deep trouble, but the bishop wants him to take on the bishop's office. Pitkanen grabs the oppurtunity, but first he has to sell all his ideals in order to realize them. And the worst thing is that he has no idea that his wife is plotting with the bishop behind his back for his promotion. ...Man Exposed ( Riisuttu mies )

Antti has a few problems knowing what kind of outward image to project to the world. He's a big guy, overweight, with tattoos and long hair in a pony tail, plays in a rock band, indulges in heavy drinking and has an active sex life... and he's in line for a promotion to bishop. In touch with the youth of today and in touch with the modern world outside, he is however exactly the type of figure his church needs to project a fresh, modern, inclusive image - but it's an image that does not reflect the rather more conservative and corrupt reality of the church's hierarchy and beliefs.

It's a hard balance to maintain and Antti is inevitably conflicted about it. He needs to keep the church authorities happy and he needs to keep his band mates happy, particularly his long time friend and drinking partner Markko, also a preacher. He also has to keep his wife (also a minister) happy and give her the baby that is lacking in their marriage and seen as a sign of its weakness by his wife's family. Things become even more complicated when Antti is forced to discharge the alcoholic and increasingly unstable Markko and appoint a new pastor in his place.

The conflict between appearances and reality are obviously pushed to the limit here for the sake of comedy and satire, and Aku Louhimies doesn't miss an opportunity to poke fun at the hypocrisy of it all - taking a swipe not just at organised religion, sucking up to the rich and influential while ignoring the people with real problems, but at wider aspects of Finnish society and the flaws within it. And although it takes things a little to extremes - this is not a film for the easily offended - by and large, Man Exposed (Riisuttu Mies) succeeds and is often funny.

It's not enough however just to mock such obvious targets and fortunately Aku Louhimies (Frozen Land) is too good a director to ignore the reality and the human sentiments that lie underneath, and he manages to avoid viewing everything in simple black and white terms. Antti is a very human character with flaws and weaknesses who largely works with the establishment, but there is a person in there who just wants to do good and do what is right by people. Nothing is clear-cut and no-one is perfect. Mindful of these complexities, the director finds a way to put this conflict across clearly, mostly avoiding standard plotting and characterisation, although the resolution whereby everyone finds a happy arrangement is a little unrealistic.

The Scandinavian DVD release from Svensk Filmindustrie is excellent. The image clear and colourful, enhanced for widescreen TVs, the soundtrack is in Dolby 2.0 and 5.1 and there are English, Finnish and Swedish subtitles for the film. It's packed with extra features including a Making of (24'), Deleted Scenes (48'), a Photo Gallery, Trailers, Teasers and a Music Video - but none of the extras have subtitles.
