4"Let's kick Tut!!"Oct 31, 2010
By H. Bala "Me Too Can Read"
Oh there wre dusty bandages unspooling in Frisco back in the day. MUMMIES ALIVE! was an animated series that came out in the '90s and lasted for one season, and that was that. But I liked the show enough that I still remember it to this day. If you've ever seen MUMMIES ALIVE! and you've seen the much higher-profiled GARGOYLES, then the bits of similarity between these two cartoons won't have escaped you, the most glaring of which is that both shows feature noble guardians from the past who are revived in the present. I'll give GARGOYLES the nod in terms of the complexity of its characters and the richness in its world-building. But keep in mind that GARGOYLES was the favored child, and Disney spared no efforts in making it as watchable as possible. MUMMIES ALIVE! got little attention paid to it, and, as I recall, it wasn't even shown on a major network. MUMMIES ALIVE! itself wasn't too shabby with its internal mythology and continuity. And there were good stories here that never quite stooped to pandering.

Presley Carnavon is a happy-go-lucky 12-year-old boy whose mom is the curator in a museum in San Francisco, and it's relevant that the museum is currently showcasing an Egyptian exhibit. When Presley becomes the target of the creepy old Egyptian sorcerer Scarab (who reminds me of Mumm-Ra), in the museum four ancient mummies rise from their sarcophagi to protect him. Presley learns that he's the reincarnation of an Egyptian prince named Rapses who existed around 3500 years ago, and that Scarab believes that Rapses is the key to achieving immortality. The four guardian mummies - Ja-Kal, Rath, Armon, and Nefer-Tina - wear mystical amulets which transform them into mighty armored warriors. But I regarded that as de rigueur, and the fighty fights against Scarab and his legion of stone stooges were fine. But my favorite moments were those in which the mummies were trying to acclimate to their new, very puzzling environments, and these mummies always made me smile. I remember two phrases from this series which I still shout out to this day when I've had a few: "With the strength of Ra!" - when the mummies were about to transform - and the always awesome "Let's kick Tut!" And the mummies always kicked ferocious Tut.

The mummies soon take young Presley under their wing, begin mentoring him, teaching him - and so Presley gets exposed to the martial arts of Egypt-su and to weapons like the boomer-ra. The mummies come with distinct personalities, and never mind that we've seen these characteristics before. There's the leader, Ja-Kal, who becomes father figure to Presley. Rath is the disdainful scholar who when asked a question he doesn't have the answer to would sniff and say "You just wouldn't understand." The fat, one-armed, slow-witted, but steadfast mummy is Armon. And Nefer-Tina is the daring girl mummy who even back in ancient Egypt harbored that extreme sports mentality. Back in the day, Nefer-Tina had to pas herself off as a dude, else she wouldn't have been allowed to participate in the fun stuff (chariot riding, fighting, etc.). Yeah, I liked them mummies, in fact, more so than Presley, who merely came off as your typical kid.

I also dug the souped-up mummy mobile. There is even a sacred mummy cat.

It's fun to relive this show. I'm glad to see that the animation is as crisp as I remembered it, that the theme song was as cool as I'd thought it was. This show rocked with the strength of Ra. MUMMIES ALIVE! - THE BEGINNING collects the series' first four episodes:

- "Ra, Ra, Ra, Ra" - Four ancient mummies rise from their sarcophagi to safeguard young Presley Carnavon from the forces of evil.

- "Sleepwalk Like an Egyptian" - As a crowd gathers outside the museum to protest the impending closing of the Sphinx exhibit, Scarab applies dream magic to trap a sleepwalking Presley.

- "Pack to the Future" - While Presley and his mom go to Yosemite Park on a camping trip, Scarab deploys a pack of animal spirits to hunt him down.

- "The Gift of Geb" - Scarab manipulates the gigantic, dumb-as-rocks Earth spirit Geb into fighting Presley's guardians, and a depowered Ja-Kal gets captured in the scuffle.

Well worth more than the asking price for the core audience. I wish they would make the entire series available.

5MUMMIES ALIVE! (1997)Feb 16, 2010
By Ra Houston "Ra Houston"
"A little boy named Presley found a secret out this year, that he was once a Pharoah when Egyptians ruled the world. Now this sorceror named Scarab tries to get him day and night, but Presley has four guardians to protect his very life. He has The Mummies/From 1525 B.C. He has The Mummies/Protection for the new Rapses. He has The Mummies/They're hanging at the Western Gate. He has The Mummies/They're gonna save the world today/The Egyptian way/Mummies alive!"
I love all things Egyptian, and I love this show. The theme song that I quoted above pretty much sums up the plot. It is truly a shame that this quality show was cancelled after only one season due to poor ratings. I enjoyed this show in its initial run during the Fall of 1997, and in subsequent years, I have enjoyed its revival in syndication. I Purchased this DVD on 02/03/2010 while in the grip of a powerful wave of nostalgia, and I've been watching it repeatedly since its arrival. I sincerely hope that the entire series of 42 episodes will soon be released on DVD. I know that I'm not the only "Kidult" that remembers and loves this show. DVD contains the episodes "Ra,Ra,Ra,Ra" "Sleep walk like an Egyptian" "Pack to the future" and "The gift of Geb"
