"I love it" does not describe my feelings . . .Feb 17, 2005

I first heard about Spiral from watching an online trailer. I'm always on the lookout for the latest anime and this one looked exceptionally interesting, so I thought, "why not check it out?" I had no idea what an amazing show I was getting myself into.
Now, granted, Spiral is not an action, fighting anime. In fact from what I have seen so far, there is very little physical confrontation. It's one big mystery story where you follow the protagonist, Ayumu Narumi, as he tries to figure out puzzles and unravel clues behind the mysterious Blade Children. Sound boring? Wrong. Ayumu gets involved in so many deadly situations, that the viewer will find himself on the edge of his seat waiting to see if Ayumu can 'think' his way out of them. I even found myself getting excited trying to figure out each mystery before he did (Talk about viewer involvement :b). But don't think this anime is nothing but one big mind game either. There is well constructed plot and plenty of comidic moments throughout each episode to keep anyone laughing. The chemistry between Ayumu and Hiyono, a bubbly energetic girl, is exceptionly hilarious, especially when she's trying to get his attention.
In it's entirety, Spiral has the makings of an awesome anime. It contains suspense, comedy and a good storyline. I found that the music often sets the mood very well too. It does require the viewer to think a bit, though, so if you really are a solid fighting, little thought, anime fan, you can subtract a star from my rating. Otherwise, it's deffinetly worth adding to any anime fan's collection.

series review, not DVD reviewNov 26, 2004

"Anime fan"
ok, so, what to say about this series. the words "awesome", "outstanding", and "excellent" come to mind.
Narumi Ayumu-kun feels that he lives in his brother Kiyotaka's shadow. He doesn't try very hard at things because he feels that everything does comes out as an imitation of his brother. However, Ayumu's brother went missing two years ago, off to search out the truth behind the mystery of the Blade Children. When Ayumu meets up with the Blade Children on his own, he is tested. Why? Because according to the Blade Children themselves, Kiyotaka believes that Ayumu is the key to saving the cursed Blade Children. Can he really do it?
This series is a great detective series. Anyone who enjoys(or has even just seen) the series Detective Conan, I mean "Case Closed", will be able to enjoy this series. It covers topics like recovering from a loss(confidence-wise or other), believing in yourself and your convictions, believing in and helping others, and finding a place in the world to be happy.
Sounds sappy and sentimental right? Well, yeah, that part did, lol, but here's another part! The clues and cleverness are all there! Several times I found myself laughing because the sneaky part of my brain figured out the trick before the character did. ^_^ It was fun. ^_^ And, from a girl's perspective, the guys in this show are great-looking, or perhaps the word "hot" is better, lol. On the other hand, for you guys, the girls in this series are just a cool! I have great respect for Hiyono(go episode 7!). Her skills and personality are crucial throughout the series. ^_^
Ok, a few last details. The opening is addictively upbeat, fun, and cool. Hiyono's puppet-show episode previews are funny. And remember, for all you aspiring anime otaku's out there, it may be dubbed, but don't forget to watch it in the original Japanese(subtitled of course), at least once. The dub can be good, but the original will always be better! And for people who are already anime fans, guess what?! That whole "one outfit per character" rule? Doesn't apply! They actually change outfits, lol.
Watch Spiral!

OMG!Mar 23, 2005
By hunybunbunny If you don't think Spiral is amazing then somethin's wrong with you! Spiral is now my most favorite anime of all time. Its more of a mystery-type rather than an action DVD. The main question everyone wants to know is "Who are the blade children?". Ayumu Narumi, the main character, is anxiously trying to figure that out since a couple of years ago his brother disappeared on his journey looking for them. Spiral is one of the best anime around. If you like Cased Closed or maybe even any Funmation DVDs, you're definitely gonna like this one.

Buy it now!Jul 18, 2006
By Kelly Erickson I first heard of this anime in a magazine, and decided, what the heck, might as well try it. I was blown away.
Spiral isn't a fighting anime or with too much violence. Spiral is one mystery after another, always fraught with danger, with a bit of violence, but not really blood.
I loved this anime from the moment I watched it, so complex and yet so simple. I highly recommened it to anyone and everyone

Not Quite the Whole PackageFeb 10, 2006

Spiral: Volume One contains the first four episodes of the anime series about a youth whose brother has gone missing and his search to uncover the truth behind the mysterious Blade Children. The Blade Children are a murderous, vicious, and cruel bunch who seem like they should be exterminated. If we are supposed to feel sympathy with these "children," it's not happening. One big strike against Spiral is that it has one of the most annoying anime characters ever drawn: Hiyoko, intrepid girl reporter for the school newspaper! Her Japanese voice makes me writhe in pain. The music in this series is embarrassingly bad.
Things I like about the series so far is the tone of mystery that keeps you wanting to know more. We sense the truth here is far stranger than fiction. There is a tone of conspiracy theory that plays well. I like the menu setup. Instead of the usual "audio," "extras," and "menu" labels, the choices are mathematical parts of a spiral: ratio (audio setup), base (menu), and exponents (extras). Very cool. The techno music at these options is extra cool. I wish they had incorporated that into the anime instead of just on the disk.
The episode titles are 1. "Spiral of Destiny" 2. "Manor of Death" 3. "Cursed Children" and 4. "The Happiness of Those Who Believe."
