Journey Through TimeMar 03, 2007
By Greg Hughes Last month I was lucky enough to stumble across this DVD in a music shop. I had always wondered if the Church had ever released a compilation of their video clips, but had never been able to find one. It turns out this compilation was originally released on video in 1990. The DVD includes two bonus tracks: "Ripple" (1992) and "Two Places At Once" (1994).
As well as seeing the clips (beginning with "The Unguarded Moment") we also see home video footage of the Church "being themselves": travelling through different cities, making faces and funny noises at the camera, playing pool, shooting a clip. That part where they're tentatively examining the food reminds me of that scene from "This Is Spinal Tap", where a band member complains about the size of the bread.
It's hard to believe how much time has passed since these clips were made. I recently saw an interview with Steve Kilbey, where he talked about the making of the clip to "Columbus", and how embarassing it was. They made this clip in America, the band standing on the back of a moving truck with a police motorcycle escort. According to Kilbey one onlooker yelled out "Hey, who are you guys? Hey, Myrtle, who are those guys?" Well, it wasn't until the release of "Under the Milky Way" in 1988 that the Church really gained fame in America.
Most of the clips on this DVD I had not seen before, the exceptions being "The Unguarded Moment", "A Different Man", "Electric Lash", "Almost With You", "Under the Milky Way" and "Metropolis". This is a great collection by one of Australia's most enduring rock bands. A must-buy.

WHY ONLY PAL????????????????????....... :(Sep 26, 2006
By Karen M. Goldsmith

Hey Amazon, why only PAL format in the US???? - it has been a long, long wait for myself and other dedicated fans of THE CHURCH to see this wonderful video upgraded to DVD. And the hope of additional songs, histories, etc.
I still have my VHS copy and it plays great but its nearly 20 years old!
We all know what DVDs can do and how much more clarity they possess.
Don't you think the limited option of a PAL format in the US is a cold
turn off??!!
- A region 1 issue is greatly desired/deserved by many here in North
America: The video has been unavailable for years and now all of a sudden
I see JOKES, MAGIC & SOUVENIRS on DVD - but only in PAL format! - this
issue is BAD JOKE played on the band and fans alike.
Amazon: this PAL only version/offering beggars restitution, please!
Sincerely
KMG

Digital transfer is a big disappointment! + LATER CORRECTION!Jun 02, 2008
By David

THE VIDEOS THEMSELVES RATE A 6! I bought a PAL machine for this and several PAL DVD Music discs I had. I have the VHS and it looks better than this on many of the early video efforts, I am sad to say..The later videos look better, but not much better than the VHS. They put copy-guard on the VHS so i can't archive on my own disc recorder, forcing me to buy it again and then making it almost unwatchable. The blacks are gone (weak) on over 1/2 of the disc. Pretty bad when the Very-HS (VHS) copy is better than the new digital copy. Whoever transfered this to digital should be very ashamed of their work for this poor transfer! THE VIDEOS THEMSELVES RATE A 6!
LET ME CORRECT MYSELF: Upon another viewing. and my experience working with video I know these early efforts are old technology (state of art for the early 80's) thus the shadow problem; it's not as bad as I first said and I am very happy I have this copy. I move it up to 4 stars, 6 on content. If you have a PAL player, buy this!
