excellent intro to missions and Ecuadorian historyFeb 11, 2010
By Becky A. Skillin This movie accurately explains why and how the 1950s tragedy happened, and why those who lived through it call it God's plan for blessing. Hearing the accounts from the 5 wives' point of view and seeing the men's primary source video, helps to piece the story together through the lens of family. Recent video enlightens the viewer to show differences between "now" and "then." Being able to hear the tribal folks' point of view is a treat, as well. They speak in Huaorani with English subtitles.
Also interesting are the anthropological tidbits from anthropologists who had studied the Huaorani as well as other "untouched" ethnic groups in Africa and the Pacific. The cultural contrasts and comparisons were fascinating.
This story is entertaining, gripping, true, and thought-provoking. A good starting point in discovery of the past, present, and future of the Amazonian tribes in Ecuador.

worth seeingMar 16, 2011
By sophe d. For those who have been touched and inspired by Elisabeth Elliot and the five missionaries who died for the sake of the gospel of Christ, this is a documentary worth seeing. It gives faces to the names and stories we have become so familiar with, and provides bits of information to fill in some gaps. Worth the time to watch. Worth the money to buy.
Through Gates of SplendorDec 30, 2011
By Easygoing This is an excellent, moving, true story, of missionaries in Equador in the 1950s. This is a presentation based on the book, Through Gates of Splendor, and in narration, photos, and videos by one of the missionaries' sons, and eye-witnesses.
Greater Love Hath No Man than to Give his Life for AnotherNov 16, 2011

I'm reminded of this scripture as I think about this movie. It's the true story of missionary families who went down to live in the east jungles of Ecuador to bring the Christian religion to a wild tribe of people who were known to be head hunters. The story shares the sacrifices they made to share their Christian belief, and their willingness to die for their beliefs. You also see great examples of unconditional charity and forgiveness. One might question if the ultimate sacrifice that was paid was really necessary and if greater precautions could have been taken and still had similar success among the natives. (Only God knows.) Nevertheless it's an inspiring yet sad story.
