In July 2004, the Committee on Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum declared a Genocide Emergency for Sudan's western region of Darfur. Tens of thousands of civlivians have been murdered there and thousands of women have been raped by Sudanese government soldiers and members of the government-supported militia sometimes referred to as the Janjaweed.
